NSW: Fourteen overcome by fumes in western Sydney

SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - Fourteen people were taken to hospital after being overcome byfumes at a south-western Sydney waste transfer station today.

NSW Fire Brigades spokesman Ian Krimmer said the source and nature of the fumes atthe station in Narellan had not been established.

He said the fumes had come from a waste storage sorting area filled with thousandsof bottles and containers.

Only the one building was affected, and there had been no impact on the rest of theplant or surrounding areas on Richardson Road, Mr Krimmer said.

The 14 workers, all of whom showed signs of airway irritation and shortness of breath,were taken to local hospitals for assessment.

Three had been taken to Campbelltown Hospital, an ambulance spokesman said.

Eleven were taken to Camden Hospital for observation.

They were all believed to be in stable condition.
