Fed: Recycle those old computers

The Australian Democrats say a $50 recycling fee should be built into the cost of computersto help stimulate recycling and reduce the one million PCs dumped in landfill each year.

Democrats information technology spokesman BRIAN GREIG says thousands of computersand other electronic appliances will be replaced this Christmas.

Mr GREIG says their disposal is now recognised by most developed countries as an internationalenvironmental problem.

He says it's time to implement a compulsory recycling system for computers similarto that in Japan, where consumers pay a built-in recycling fee of up to $50 at the timeof purchase.

But the industry has rejected the fee as unwarranted.

Australian Information Industry Association executive director ROB DURIE says the industryis exploring recycling options, and the response to a pilot scheme is encouraging.

Under the pilot recycling scheme in western Sydney, consumers can deliver unwantedcomputers to recycling sites.
