Fed: Latham's having wonderful honeymoon - PM

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has told his backbenchers that Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM
is enjoying a wonderful honeymoon.

With a Newspoll showing Labor under Mr LATHAM could win government this year, Mr HOWARD's
warned the first joint party room meeting for 2004 that the election will be tight.

A government spokesman says Mr HOWARD reminded MPs and senators that the government
was in a much more parlous position in the 2001 election year than in 2004.

However, Mr HOWARD said there were reservations in the electorate about Labor's ability
to run the economy.

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO told backbenchers that Mr LATHAM was policy-weak.
