NSW: First pipe laid at site of desalination plant

The first pipe's been laid at the site of the desalination plant in Kurnell .. as construction
of the New South Wales government's controversial project gets underway.

The pipe is the first of around two thousand to form the 18 kilometre pipeline .. connecting
the plant with Sydney's water supply system at Erskineville.

The pipe system will cross Botany Bay .. to travel through open space and industrial
areas .. tunnelling under roads in residential areas.

KERRY SCHOTT from Sydney Water says it'll deliver 250 million litres of drinking water
a day to Sydney Water customers.

She says the pipeline will cost 650 million dollars and should be functioning by early 2010.
