FED: Nelson - adopted children may have to be returned

Opposition Leader BRENDAN NELSON is warning against against a knee-jerk response to
an alleged adoption racket involving Indian children.

The Weekend Australian is reporting at least 30 children adopted in Australia may have
been stolen from their parents as part of a child trafficking network in India operating
in 1998 and 1999.

Dr NELSON says there's no need for Canberra to take control of adoption legislation
from the states.

But he says if any of the children are found to have been kidnapped they will most
likely have to be returned to their parents.

The Queensland government and Indian investigators will soon begin working together
to investigate the claims.
